Real world examples of Long Tail graphs (I)

New post series including examples of Long Tail graphs that our users send us for a quick analysis.

We know from an earlier post how an ideal search term popularity distribution looks like and that it shows a straight line when plotted on a logarithmic chart. Here’s an example that comes pretty close to a perfect search term popularity distribution:

Note that only the top 1′000 unique terms are shown, the Tail is much longer. Here’s the logarithmic chart for the same website:

As one can easily see, it’s almost a straight line. What this means: this site has enough content for its specific niche and the popularity the search engines attribute to it. So the webmaster might want to think about a link building campaign to improve his site’s overall authority while still adding new content. If he doesn’t balance his efforts well and say only focuses on link building, he will see a drooping tail sooner or later.

Thanks to Chris McBride for sharing the graphs of his website Savory New York!
